A small isolated town in Alaska with a population  of just over 500 people is about to get 30 days of night for a whole
month. Many of the locals play it safe and flee the small town, afraid of being snowed in. On the last day of sunlight, an
unseen drifter (Ben Foster) walks into town, and for some strange reason many of the towns dogs have been
slaughtered, all telecommunications to the outside world have been destroyed and every means of transport has been
sabotaged. The small town's Sheriff Eben Oleson (Josh Hartnett) is on the case, and begins to ask the drifter
questions on how exactly he got to the small town. Night falls and in the dark cold shadows the locals can begin to hear
loud screams, getting closer and closer to their homes. The Sheriff and his wife Stella (Melissa George) are the first to
encounter the blood thirsty creatures and survive; they soon head back to town and warn everyone to arm themselves
with shotguns, and that it isn’t a drill. As the town is on edge, fearing what is going to happen, the town is infested with
unstoppable blood thirsty vampires, whose only objective is to feed on  and murder everyone left in the town, before
burning it to the ground. While a small group of survivors take refuge in abandoned blood stained homes, and  in  attics
hiding from the vampires, they hope to God that they can make it through the darkest month in Alaska.

A few months before 30 Days of Night appeared in the cinemas all over the world, there wasn’t one horror site that
didn’t have a banner or a trailer on their website. Horror fans couldn’t wait, and we all were counting down the days, and
even hours until this film opened up in the cinemas. Well finally I got my ass off the couch, and to the cinema this week
and finally got to view this film for the first time, and I really got to hand it to director David Slade for shooting this highly
entertaining gory little film. Despite that the film ran for little over 2 fucking hours, and could have deserved a cut here
and there,  overall the film was very enjoyable to watch. Now I am not much of a fan when it comes to blood sucking
vampire films, but for weeks everyone has had mixed emotions of this film, some hated it and some loved it. Well let
me break it down to you all like this. Here are my pros and cons on this film.

Pros: The vampires look fucking wicked, their teeth are not like any other vampires, though they do resemble a piranha.
The special effects and gore is fucking off the charts (you got to love it, when you see someone hacking the shit out of a
ghoul’s neck with an axe). Storyline is somewhat fresh and I have never heard of before, like come on vampires in
Alaska!? What a fucking brilliant idea. The cast all did a spectacular job with their characters, and you got to love Aussie
babe Melissa George on screen, way to go girl...

What comes with the good also comes with the bad..

Cons: Like I said before movie was far too long and could have done with a good edit or more gore. They really never
explained how the vampires got to Alaska or how they came in contact with the stranger. Now if you were a sheriff and
your town has reports of someone killing dogs, destroying every means of transport in and out, then it doesn’t take a
genius to know the stranger who is ordering raw meat at the local diner has lost the plot. For 30 days hiding out in
houses and sneaking around kinda got on my nerves a little, it could of done with a bit more action at least. No nudity at
all, well I was at least hoping to see a boob at least. The ending didn’t cut it for me to tell you the truth (I won’t give it
away) but I will say this, I fucking hated it and I felt like gouging out my own eyes.

Acting I can’t fault one bit. I adore Melissa George to death and in my eyes there is nothing this girl can do wrong that
will make me dislike her. It’s just a pity not too many filmmakers take her seriously and  cast her in more films. For fuck
sakes she has the looks, acting skills to take on any lead role thrown at her, so come on guys give her a god damn
chance will you! Now actor Josh Hartnett has kinda slowly grown on me over the years since he was cast in Halloween
H20 (1998) and The Faculty (1998), though I couldn’t stand the guy in Pearl Harbour (2001). But honestly I can’t really
see this actor getting any better in the near future, maybe its cause he has that (I don't give a shit) type of attitude which
kinda gets on my nerves. But then again he is earning the big bucks while I sit here and type bullshit, while drinking an
$8 beer, damn you Josh Hartnett, damn you to hell (laughs).

The gore factor had some really nice headshots with the shotgun; the heads explode in a slow frame for a second or
so. Now days you don't see too many deaths by an axe, though in this film you get to see full on multiple hacking
attempts to behead a vampire which will blow away any gorehound. And since this is a vampire film, yes you get to see
many and I mean many throat chewing, slicing and tearing scenes.

As I said before I am not a huge fan when it comes to vampire films but David Slade's, 30 Days of Night is truly a
fucking blitz of a film to watch and I can't wait to watch it again on DVD when the unrated version appears. I'll definitely
be pre-ordering a copy when it appears on amazon.com that’s for damn sure. I personally recommend any horror fans
out there who hasn’t yet seen this film, to watch it on the big screen right away while you still can, and if not definitely
keep your eyelids peeled back for the DVD once it hits  local  or online stores.
