September 11th 2001, a date I'm sure everyone knows the significance of. The deadliest terrorist attack in history. Hijacked planes flew into both
towers of the World Trade Center and The Pentagon. A fourth crashed in a field after its passengers rushed the cockpit and attacked the hijackers.
Well known facts...or are they?
Before the smoke had stopped billowing from the ruins, conspiracy theories were starting to appear. While the blame was laid at many feet, an
overwhelming number of these theories claimed that the attacks originated right here in the USA, that the Bush administration was responsible
using them as a justification to seize powers and drive through legislation such as The Patriot Act. “911- In Plane Site” examines these theories
and the evidence for them, though from an admittedly biased point of view.
My own feelings on the matter are, while I hope the next administration hangs Bush, Chaney, etc for treason, war crimes and other assorted
crimes I have trouble accepting that they would do this to their own citizens. But on the other hand, they have wasted nearly 4,000 American lives
on a pointless war in Iraq so I can't entirely rule it out either.
With that out of the way, on to the meat of the DVD...
The evidence offered up is a very mixed bag, ranging from the credible, to hearsay, to the easily explained away. The most compelling is offered up
for the theory that it was a cruise missile and not a plane that hit the Pentagon. The crux of the argument revolves around the size of the hole it
made being much smaller than an airliner would create and the lack of fire damage from the jet fuel as seen at the World Trade Center. Much is
also made of the lack of debris from a plane in photos taken at the site. These are interesting points and are hard to simply dismiss.
What they offer up in regard to the planes that hit the World Trade Center is not nearly as compelling however. Most of it rests on an odd shadow
on the belly of one of the 757s and a flash visible just before it hits the tower. This is stretched to accommodate the theory that the shadow is
from a weapons pod and rather than commercial airliners it was military aircraft that was made into drones and remotely detonated as they hit the
towers.
They do provide stills of a transport craft that resemble 757s, but the rest of the theory is weak. Converting this complex a craft into a remote
controlled drone isn't currently feasible for starters. For another the pictures of the alleged pod are very dark and blurry, not at all definitive or
convincing.
And last and most importantly, if a cruise missile hit the Pentagon, and military planes were flown into The World Trade Center, what happened to
the actual planes and the people on them? The makers of “911- In Plane Site” admit they don't have any idea and this leaves a huge gap in their
credibility. Making those planes and the hundreds of people aboard them vanish would be a major undertaking, surely some clues would have
come to light by now.
Compounding all of this the cheap and boring way the information is presented. There's no interviews, no location shots, just producer/host Dave
von Kleist sitting in front of a tv/vcr hook-up pointing out things on videos and then cutting to blowups of what he just pointed out. This gets old
real fast and makes it hard to keep one's attention focused. This film's makers need to take some lessons from Michael Moore on how to make this
kind of non-fiction interesting, because “Fahrenheit 911” this isn't.
To sum it all up then, this is a very mixed bag of conspiracy theories and evidence to support them all presented in a very dull manner. Might be
worth a look if you're really into this kind of thing or it turns up on TV, but I can't really recommend buying it.
