Recently released on parole from a state prison jail, Jerry Goss (Harry Connick Jr.) an abusive wife beater and drug addict begins to seek down his
former wife Agnes White (Ashley Judd.) He torments her by making mysterious phone calls to her room, at a run down motel called Rustic Motel.
Her lesbian co-worker R.C (Lynn Collins) who works at a sleazy bar in town, introduces her to Gulf War veteran Peter Evans (Michael Shannon)
whom she meet at work. Agnes  is terrified that her ex-husband is going to hurt her again, and turns to Peter for comfort and support when Goss
shows up. Unaware that her life is just about to flip upside down once she finds out that Peter has just escaped a mental institution and has
cocaine/crystal meth addiction, and a paranoid schizophrenic begins to have delusions of the US Army abducted him and performed secret
experiments on him, by planting deadly insects that feed off his blood. While Agnes begins to have a strong attraction towards Peter (due to the
large amount of crystal meth she intakes)  both begin to share the same psychotic delusion together.

Legendary filmmaker William Friedkin who created the most chilling possession films ever to be made back in 1973 called
The Exorcist, has just
attempted to shock us again with a psychological thriller called the
BUG. Now most horror fans will either love this film or hate it, by comparing it to
The Exorcist, which sadly I tend to do a lot with most filmmakers. BUG isn't as frightening or powerful as The Exorcist, but it is surprisingly scary in
other factors such as drugs and mentally instability. No… you will not get to see any creepy crawlers eating or devouring human flesh, but instead
the filmmaker did a fantastic job of making us the viewer, the atmosphere draws you deep into the film and makes you feel as claustrophobic and
paranoid as the characters portrayed in the film.

The cast within the film did a remarkable job with the roles of their characters. I was surprisingly astounded with actress Ashley Judd and actor
Michael Shannon and truly believe these two really deserve Academy awards for acting in this film. While their characters slowly unwind they
become very intense and unique to watch towards the end of the film, which makes this film so far more exciting and grabs your attention cause
you get to see them both spiral downwards into a voyeurism of the mind suspense thriller.

The gore factor is pretty low, you'll see a few stab wounds with a butcher knife, blood smeared over the walls, a scene where Peter rips out his
tooth with a pair or pliers. That’s about it really, but like I said this film isn't about flesh eating bugs, it’s more of an insight of what happens to
those who are addicted to crystal meth, cocaine and other forms of hallucinogenic drugs.

William Friedkin's
BUG is definitely a good film to watch, but it doesn't get really interesting until the end of the film. But I would have loved to of
seen David Cronenberg tackle this film, it  has that Cronenberg feel throughout the whole entire film. Still William Friedkin gets both thumbs up for
creating one hell of a dark psychological horror/tripped out film.
