Nowadays, when horror fans hear or see the name Eli Roth on the big screen some of the audience tend to cringe in their seats or kick back with a
huge grin on their face, while their eyes light up with amazement. Back in 2001 the internet was like a feeding ground for all horror fans across the
globe- when the Cabin Fever trailer came out we had witnessed a legendary filmmaker we all know and love, the one and only Peter Jackson
(Dead Alive, Bad Taste and Meet The Feebles) speak the words “An unrelenting, gruesomely funny blood bath. I loved it!” which honestly sums
this movie up in a nutshell in so many little words. But horror fans went bezerk buying tickets and preparing to watch a terrifying gruesome film.
This was the either the downfall or uprising (depending on how you look at this movie) of this filmmaker, personally I love Cabin Fever, I think its
borderline on the gruesome aspects but it takes you on a trip about how paranoid a person could get when having to face a life or death situation.
Honestly how would you feel knowing the person sitting beside you in the cinema has a flesh eating disease which is highly contagious just by
touching or them coughing on you?
Cabin Fever begins with a five college students Paul (Rider Strong), Karen (Jordan Ladd), Bert (James DeBello), Marcy (Cerina Vincent) and Jeff
(Joey Kern) who head off to a cabin deep in the mountains for a weekend of relaxation, drinking beer and swimming in the near by lake. That’s
until Bert who is bored of his wits, decides to go shooting squirrels with his gun, and accidentally shoots a hermit who lives in the forest just near
the cabin. Bert is unaware that the homeless hick has a flesh eating disease, he warns him to stay put while he goes and gets help, but decides to
not to tell any of his friends what he just done. Later that night the hermit finds his way to the cabin, and begs the teenagers to get him to a
hospital. The teens began to freak out because at this time the man’s skin looks badly burnt and is peeling off his face. Just when the hermit
recognizes Bert from that afternoon, Bert quickly slams the door shut, before the guy can get a word in. While they stand around arguing what
they should do, the hermit jumps into the jeep and tries to get to a near by hospital. The teens all began to freak out grabbing a item close by
them before running outside, as they all begin to panic if this guy steals the jeep they have no way of getting back home, so they try and force the
guy out of the jeep by any means necessary. Even if it means hitting him with a tie iron, bashing the car with a baseball bat or taking warning pop
shots at him in the drivers seat. The hermit begins to cough up blood, spewing all over the inside of the car and windscreen, before exiting the
jeep. As he staggers over towards the girls, Paul automatically jumps in front of the guy and warms him to stay away, before lighting his arm on
fire. It doesn’t take long for the guy’s jacket to ignite into a fireball, as he quickly runs off into the forest never to be seen or heard from again.
The next following day, the teenagers argue amongst themselves, who is going to clean the jeep, while the others begin to seek out help from the
surrounding cabin neighbours. What they don’t know is that the guy is laying face down in the lake, just near the pump which sucks the water up
towards there cabin. Karen is the first to become infected by the virus, as she lies in bed with a headache all day, her friends think it’s just all the
stress from last night and leaves her alone to sleep it off. Paul who has a mad school boy crush on Karen, brings her a drink of water in case she
gets thirsty. Karen pulls Paul into the bed and asks him to cuddle into her until she falls asleep, which he does. To later he awakes and begins to
take a stab (no pun intended) at her by feeling her up, while she lies in bed moaning and groaning, Paul goes deeper, until he notices his fingers
are sticky. When he pulls them out they are covered in blood, while bits of flesh fall onto the bed. Paul’s freaks out and the other teenagers come
racing into the room, all of a sudden Bert clicks into panic mode and demands that everyone stay away from Karen because he doesn’t want to get
sick.
One by one the group become paranoid of those who are around them, they begin to cook their own meals, not drink anything but capped beers,
until they can find a way to get off the mountain. The weekend slowly becomes their worst nightmare they have ever imagined, one by one they
are soon to be consumed by the disease, and the towns community will do just about anything to keep the disease from spreading once again.
Eli Roth’s Cabin Fever is very cleverly scripted, which can be intense and draws you deeper into the movie. Eli Roth does have 2 cameos in his
movie, which he definitely captured the very essence of a stoner teenager and freakishly a bald headed tin pin bowler employee. I think the whole
reason why Cabin Fever does loose the respect of its fellow horror fan, is the fact the movie was taken serious at the beginning and then slowly
towards the end of the film it went into a cheesy B grade stale humoured Troma-ish flick. There are a number of scenes that could have been done
without, for example the deer scene, pancakes kung fu scene, the ending itself is a joke that isn’t actually funny. Why Eli Roth done this really gets
to me at times, the movie was going so well and it became a slow tongue in cheek ending. I think if he could go back and make a serious, gory
ending and have the ending what is now as a alternative ending then this film would have been a huge hit when it was released. But as all
filmmakers, they tend to learn by their own mistakes and try not to redo them later in the future.
The acting in Cabin Fever was surprisingly pretty good. Actor James DeBello is a fucking legend in my books, he makes a cool stoner, and metal
head in any film. Actress Cerina Vincent was another cast member who I enjoyed on screen, she has the looks, the skills to make her character
come to love and most of all gets both thumbs up when it come to a nude/sex scene. The rest of the cast also did a tremendous job with the roles
they had to play with.
The gore factor is fairly high guys. You will see man scenes such as a German Sheppard gutted open, a viscous dog attack, lips chewed off,
shotgun blast to the head explosion, screwdriver to the ear, impalement and a half a torso scene….etc.
In the extras department you get a good amount of little goodies. A few short clips from Eli Roth’s The Rotten Fruit show, 5 audio commentaries,
behind-the-scenes footage, 2 different version which one is for the family and the other for chicks, trailer and a pancake kung fu demonstration.
This stuff will keep you busy for the next few hours, let me tell you that.
Cabin Fever is not for the average gorefan, if you are looking for a movie to chill out with your loved one one night, then this movie is what you
want to get. It’s worth every cent, and very much watch-able, I have seen this film about 6 times since I purchased it so that tells the story.
Though if your not 100% satisfied after reading this review, then my last option is to rent the DVD before you actually buy it.

As a last hurrah after college, friends Jeff, Karen, Paul, Mercy and Bert embark on a vacation deep into the mountains. With the top down and the music up, they drive to a remote cabin to enjoy their last days of decadence before entering the working world. Then somebody gets sick. Karen's skin starts to bubble and burn as something grows inside her, tunneling beneath her flesh. As they debate about how to save her, they look at one another and realize that any one of them could also have it. What began as a struggle against the disease soon turns into a battle against friends, as the fear of contagion drives them to turn on each other.
