The cannibal genre is one of the most talked about movie genres even right up to this very day. As a lot of you might have realized that the zombie
genre has been dominating the cinemas and DVD section of our local DVD stores since 2002 when video game to movie
Resident Evil first
appeared, before kicking into zombie overdrive. Well hopefully this is about to change since Ruggero Deodato's
Cannibal Holocaust (1980) is
going to be getting remade in 2009 by Ruggero Deodato himself, who is going to be getting behind the camera once again. Though keep in mind
the title of the film is going to be called
Cannibals (2009). Just maybe, we might begin to see more of these flesh chomping, bone crunching, 80s
exploitation titles falling directly into the remake list, yeah it might only be a small cluster of cannibal films out there, but I personally would like to
see a couple get that wonderful remake makeover like we have seen in so many zombie movies lately. Some might say that
Cannibal Holocaust is
without the doubt the mother of all cannibal films, I tend to sometimes lean away from that and think of another Ruggero Deodato title called
Jungle Holocaust (1977) to be the beginning and the mother of all cannibal films, where Umberto Lenzi's Cannibal Ferox (1981) is probably the
most gruesome cannibal film to be ever made. But apart from all these two legendary Italian filmmakers who have taken up all the fame and glory
of the cannibal spotlight, along came another Italian director called Antonio Margheriti that also created a masterpiece called
Cannibal Apocalypse
(1980)
which the plot is a lot different to these other cannibal movies we all know and love.

Cannibal Apocalypse begins in the mist of the Vietnam War, 2 POW soldiers Charlie Bukowski (Giovanni Radice now formally known as John
Morghen) and Tom Thompson (Tom King) have been kept hostage in a 10ft hand dug mud pit with a bamboo spiked gate on top to prevent the
soldiers from escaping. Their Captain Norman Hopper (John Saxon) is sent in on a top secret mission behind enemies lines in helicopters, with a
team of highly armed soldiers ready to rescue the remaining POW's and take them home. As Captain Hopper reaches down to help pull the soldiers
out of the pit, he soon witness that they are both eating the torn flesh from a recently dead Asian woman like a two mongrel dogs, POW Tom
slowly looks up and notices the Captain’s hand reaching towards him and quickly jumps up and bites into the Captain’s forearm. The movie then
skips to the present where the war is going but the 2 POW's soldiers are committed to a mental hospital and are  undergoing treatment for
several months after there rescue. While the retired Captain Hopper who now suffers from nightmares ever since his rescue mission, begins to
have strange flash backs when staring at a couple slices of meat in the fridge. But things are not so well for Charlie as he is released from the
hospital and straight into the local community, the first place Charlie decides to go, is to watch a movie in the old movie theatre. As he is sitting
comfortably in his seat, he notices a couple in front of him making out. His reaction is to get a little taste for himself and bites into the woman's
neck, as she begins to scream Charlie quickly flees the theatre to not be caught and runs into a store in the mall, which is soon surrounded by
cops and angry bikers. Hopper is called to the scene, to convince Charlie to leave the mall and go back to the hospital for more treatment. While at
the hospital they're also having their own crisis when they find out that some of the staff have just been infected by a contagious disease that has
quickly turns people into flesh eating cannibals with just one bite.

Antonio Margheriti's
Cannibal Apocalypse is a tad different to some of the other cannibal films you have seen around on DVD. This film is not at all
shot in the jungles of  the  Amazon with cannibals with spears hiding and lurking in the dense rain forests, but instead it is brought to the
suburban streets of a small community somewhere in America. When you hear the words
Cannibal Apocalypse you instantly think to yourself
"Shit, this movie must have hundreds of cannibals, going mad and chewing everyone to death" which then you think to yourself of
Cannibal
Holocaust
or even Zombie Holocaust. Well there is definitely cannibals in the movie but I’m sorry to say their isn't anything close to a holocaust.
Cannibal Apocalypse does have its highs and lows right throughout the movie, I love the storyline and the ending but it could of done with far
more bloodshed or cannibal carnage at times.

Those who were born around in the 70s or 80s will know a lot about a actor named John Saxon. Saxon is one of the most extremely talented
actors from the mid 80s as he has appeared in many movies which have won him several golden globes. Saxon kicked ass in Bruce Lee's
Enter The
Dragon (1973)
and especially in Wes Craven's A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984). It was also cool to see him appearing in Dario Argento's
Pelts from the number one US horror television show Masters of Horror, playing the role of a fur trapper who  died a gruesome death. When cast
in
Cannibal Apocalypse he played the role of the Captain who was unknowingly infected with a contagious disease that sooner or later turns
them rabid. Director Antonio Margheriti couldn't have picked a better man to play the lead role for the job back then, Saxon was at the peak of his
career, which lasted for over a several decades with so many memorable movies we all will never forget. Another actor who many cannibal fans will
know a thing or two about is Italian actor Giovanni Radice who was born in Rome in 1954.
Cannibal Apocalypse was this actor’s first debut on
screen which boosted his career right into several so many exploitation cult favourites such as
Cannibal Ferox (1980) as a drug-crazed racist
madman, with working right beside actor David Hess in Ruggero Deodato's
The House on the Edge of the Park (1980) as his wimp friend Ricky,
and not to mention working on Lucio Fulci's
City of the Living Dead (1980). I have so much respect for this actor, it’s a pity we don't see more of
Radice around in movies now days. I think the latest film I can recall seeing him in was
The Omen (2006) remake as Father Spiletto which he did
a pretty outstanding job with his role in that film. One thing a lot of you might not know is that Giovanni Radice created a stage name by taking the
anglicized form of his first name (Giovanni which becomes John) and he used his grandmother's maiden name as his last name (Morghen) which all
together makes John Morghen. When his family realized that Giovanni was using his family name to create incredibly violent films they practically
disowned him. To know a little more about amazing actor please visit his official website at

official myspace page at

The gore factor is averagely high in
Cannibal Apocalypse, you'll see plenty of good old jaw chomping, flesh tearing fun right from the start and
right to the very end. I would like to tell you more but I truly don't want to spoil these gory moments for those who haven't had the chance to view
this awesome movie.
