The 80’s were certainly a booming time for young filmmakers. Armed with a lot of ideas, no cash, they just grab dear old Mum’s family handy video
camera, then start to get a few close friends together to a shoot a film on weekends. Most films end up fading away into oblivion, some went on to
become genuine classics like Peter Jacksons Bad Taste, and J.R Bookwalter's zombie gorefest The Dead Next Door, which they and a few other
titles went onto becoming cult underground favorites. Jon McBride's Cannibal Campout is one such film.
The story takes place when a group of four friends go into the woods for a camping weekend. But within these woods lurks three mentally
challenged, Cannibalistic redneck brothers who have been offing off anyone who comes anywhere or into the woods, which they end up storing
there mutilated carcass's in an old abandoned camp house.
I know it sounds like 1001 movies that came before and after this was made, but there is truly something a bit different about this film. The deaths
in this thing range from the fairly average off-screen type, and then slowly start getting nastier and nastier, just wait until the last one. I could not
believe it myself, and what I was seeing! I just sat there thinking Holy Shit! It is definitely a standout, and quite possibly one of the main reasons
this film has become somewhat legendary in 80’s SOV movies.
Yeah fair enough Cannibal Campout has the acting and production values of primary school play, but it leaps over its shortcoming just in sheer
entertainment value. Sure it’s full of cliches, but what 80’s camping movie wasn’t?. Most of the gore is of the HG Lewis style, but works in its favor
to deliver a campy fun movie. I couldn’t imagine the budget being anymore than $500, but you can tell everyone had a good time making it, and it
comes through to make a highly enjoyable shot on video cheesefest.
Camp Motion Pictures are a new mob onto the DVD scene, with Cannibal Campout being on of there first 2007 release list. To dig up such an
obscure film and give it the treatment they have gave it, Camp Motion Pictures should get a pat on the back. The transfer, considering the source
material, is very clean, but does tend to get a little jumpy here and their. The extras on this disc shines though. A half and hour documentary on
the making of tells probably everything you will ever need to know about this film & more. A rather informative commentary with director Jon
McBride touches on even more bases than the documentary. The deleted scenes don’t really add up to much, and the music video isn’t much to
write home about either.
Jon McBride's Cannibal Campout is a very stellar release, and for an above average SOV film. It may not be to everyone’s taste, but at least take
the time to check it out one day, just so you know what everyone else is talking about.
