Eastern Eye have been one of my favourite labels since I moved to Australia. They put out some great films from Asia and often they are making
their debut for the English speaking marketplaces on Eastern Eye. Well before coming out in the UK or North America, we had a Region 4 DVD of
Ong Bak, and that kick ass DVD is still the best release for those of us that need English subtitles while watching movies in Thai.
While I was not familiar with Cutie Honey, I figured if it was on Eastern Eye, it was worth taking a look at. Cutie is a not quite so mild mannered
woman who has a special necklace. Called the “Love System,” this necklace allows her to change into Cutie Honey, which gives her all sorts of
special powers. When Cutie’s uncle is kidnapped, it’s up to her to save him, but to do that she must face the evil Panther Claw group, who use
nano technology to ensure they have the best weaponry around.
Cutie Honey is a very silly live action cartoon, which makes sense as it’s Manga based, with flashbacks even being done with actual Manga. Thanks
to the casting of one of Japan’s top swimsuit models, Eriko Sato, as Honey, the film is like a super sexy version of TV’s Batman complete with camp.
Cutie Honey fills the screen with the crazed kinetic energy that only seems to occur when Manga meets the movies and the great cinematography
effectively captures Cutie’s world.
Unfortunately, as is often the case with movies like this, the film loses steam after awhile and also just wears the viewer out a bit. The film
remains mostly entertaining, and the engaging visual style keeps things interesting even when the story delves into karaoke parties. There are
some laugh out loud moments, and fans of Stephen Chow’s visual humor gags should find much to appreciate in Cutie Honey.
Not to be outdone by comic book cameo meister Stan Lee, Cutie Honey’s creator Gô Nagai has a brief cameo as the guy sitting in the car Honey
lands on after she’s been in the tornado.
The DVD comes with a few extras. There’s the film’s teaser and full trailers, TV spots, and a still gallery. There’s also a trailer collection for other
Madman Entertainment and Easter Eye titles. The main extra is a 20-minute making of featurette with behind the scenes footage, press
conferences and interviews. There are subs translating both the talking and some text that appears at times, so in places it’s very busy. There’s
quiet a bit of good info, but it may take a few viewings to catch it all.
Oddly, subs are provided for one song that’s sung in English, but are not there for some sung in Japanese.
Recommended for fans of Manga, wacky Japanese cinema, and swimsuit models running 'round in their underwear.
