Cutting Room is a film within a film about a film being made by the core team of Producer Charles Drake (Weetus Cren), Writer/Director Ed Smith
(Mark Elias) & the Casting Director Joanna Kramer (Elizabeth Daily from One Dark Night and The Devils Rejects), and revolves around them sitting
in the office, working out all the stuff they have to get done for the movie they are about to shoot. Ed is running behind on the deadline for the
script, and Charles is losing the plot trying to work out a distribution deal for the movie. Adding to the disaster is the fact that main star Brock
Steele (Dimitri Lekkos) has pulled out of the picture (and later disappears) and the only other actor available for the role is a former sitcom actor
Nicky Dorfman (Garrison Koch).
Also floating around in the building are the dumb ass office chick/turned actress Mindy (Lindsey Labrum) & the extremely scary looking Janitor,
Manuel (Tony Keyes from Lethal Weapon 4).
Manuel has been a mainstay at the studio for a long time and for some reason seems to think the place is haunted, after many actors & actresses
have either died, committed suicide or just disappeared over the years. But are the few deaths in this the work of the haunted studio or are other
forces at work here?
Director Ian Truitner has crafted himself a rather enjoyable black comedy/spoof here. It’s not a straight out horror movie and everything is played
for cheese value and works very well in regards to the context of the story and how it turned out. There are a few suspenseful moments to be had
though, and the guy certainly knows how to set up a shot! One of the more impressive ones is where the camera just pans through the studio
corridors and you don’t know if something is gonna jump out and scare the shit out of you or not!!
Also surprising is the acting in this also fits perfectly with the tone of the film, well maybe except Mindy whose retardedness really started to annoy
me after a bit.
DVD extras include mock interviews with Nicky Dorfman & Brock Steele, deleted scenes, Outtakes and a very informative commentary by Director
Ian Truitner & Cinematographer Mateo Londono.
Cutting Room is a breath of fresh air in the wake of all the dodgy humor themed horror movies that have come out lately (Club Dread I’m talking
about you) with a perfect mix between the two, but also being different in the fact that its also a real pot boiler, taking the time to show Charles’s
descent into paranoia and everything else concerned.
"A Serial Killer Comedy."
