A wild cyclone is brewing off the Caribbean coast. Out at sea are a boat full of tourists, a fishing vessel, and a plane flying over from the mainland.
Once the cyclone hits the plane crashes heavily into the water, killing half of who is on board, and the fishing vessels sinks, making the crew jump
into the lifeboat.
Once the cyclone has passed the crew in the fishing vessel drift through the ocean, until they come across the survivors of the plane crash and
help them aboard. Drifting even further into the deep blue sea the fishing boat then comes across the Tourist boat and both groups hook up with
each other. What follows is the account of the group and there desperate struggle for survival against the elements, and the sharks who continue
to circle the boat.
The group spends 2 weeks at sea with very little water and no food. But at first things aren’t too bad as they continue to catch fish to eat. But
after a while the fishing rod is lost so they turn to the only other animal on the boat….. A small dog. After killing it and using it’s heart for bait.
When that fails and a couple more people have died off, do they have to resort to the ultimate sin… to eat Human Flesh?
On paper this sounds like a fucking ripper of a film. You’ve got a lot of things that usually make a great movie, disaster, carnage, cannibalism etc.
But here they all just fall flat. There are some genuinely excellent scenes here but the film as whole just goes for way too bloody long. A full 45
minutes could have easily been chopped out of it and it would not have made a difference. Fair enough there wouldn’t have been so many bonding
scenes (i.e. Padding out scenes), but this a friggin exploitation movie, not some crappy drama! I want to see plenty of action, not wait half an hour
between shit happening!
The cast consists of a few well known exploitation actors like Olga Karlatos (Zombie), Hugo Stiglitz (Nightmare City) & Arthur Kennedy (The
Antichrist) but even these skilled actors couldn't really do a lot with there screen time.
This is the first time I have seen a Rene Cardona Jr film (Cardona Sr is also a filmmaker and his best film is the late 60’s Mexican classic Night of the
Bloody Apes). The guy has 95 film credits to his name, and to a lot of people this is his best film. Sure he knew his way around a camera, but there’
s no point in making a film if it turns out this boring.
Synapse keep up there usual standard and deliver a nice transfer of the film, but with only a few trailers and an alternate title credits sequence as
extras.
For disaster movie completists only, even though they will probably find it boring.
"If the storm doesn't kill you... the sharks will! Who will survive?"
