A young woman named Michelle (Michelle Wright) begins to write in a journal while narrating the end of the world. She begins by saying, "Six
Months - that's how long it took for the world as we knew it to come to an end. The Bible preached the world would end in fire and war. It ended in
plagues and hunger. All brought on by the technology built to protect us. Conventional Weapons weren't enough, we built more powerful
weapons. Weapons capable of spreading disease, plagues or hunger, weapons designed to do the un-imaginable...and in the end, it took one
man with one weapon".
Soon after, we meet Gary (Gary Ugarek) who is heading over to his friend Brian's (Brian Wright) house to knock back a few beers and do a little bit
of target pratice on the outskirts of town. Gary explains to Brian that the cable TV and landline phones are not working for some strange reason,
but luckily the radio is still works. Michelle is slightly concerned that Brian is leaving the house with no way of contacting her if something bad
happens while out shooting, but Brian tells her everything will be alright and heads out with Gary. Michelle decides to go outside to hang the wet
clothes on the clothes line, while her son Connor (Connor Brandt) and his best friend are playing on the trampoline in the backyard. They suddenly
hear a loud explosion which is followed by a bright light from a great distance. Michelle quickly tells Connor to get inside and sends Connor's friend
home. A few hours pass and now all communication is not working, leaving Michelle with no way to contact Brian. She becomes fanatically worried
and concerned about his and their family's safety. A few blocks from her house the interstate has been backed up for hours - miles of cars, trucks
and angry people want to know whats going on, and what caused the explosion. Slowly it becomes nightfall and Brian and Gary head back home,
but for some strange reason the interstate is filled with vacant cars and trucks that are still running with the doors wide open. Brian and Gary get
out the car with their handguns to see whats really going on. In the smokey distance they see dark shadows walking towards them, but it's not
until 100 yards that dozens of these dark shadows begin to run straight toward them. Brian and Gary realize they are not human but infact flesh
eating zombies, and begin to fire off gun shots while running back to their car. The city is now a tomb, and the dead are walking the streets. Block
by block, house by house, family by family, they are feasting upon the living. Can Brian make it back home to his beloved family before the zombies
tear them apart? You'll just have to find that out for yourself...
For a no budget film Deadlands: The Rising is one fucking awesome zombie film. The acting wasn't cheesy at all, and zombies looked wicked
(especially the zombie in the car with her throat torn out) the storyline was somewhat fresh and new and the gore is outstanding. I loved every
second of this film and the atmosphere and creepiness it presented was spine-chilling. Independent filmmaker Gary Ugarek brings us a zombie
tale, kinda like early George Romero did with Dawn of the Dead, but this time the zombies are much faster and hungrier than any other zombie
film. These zombies are capable of running a 100 yard dash in seconds and they will crash tackle and devour any poor fucker who gets in their
way. Truthfully, I have only ever prefered one film that had fast-moving zombies and that's Dan O'Bannon's Return of the Living Dead. Not too
many other films have pulled it off as well as that film, but Deadlands: The Rising certainly did the job right in every which way possible.
The one thing to do when it comes to making an independent film and trying to save cash is to simply cast yourself, friends and family in the film
and focus all the funds into the special effects and props. This is how director Gary Ugarek managed to do it, and did do a awesome job at it. I am
truly gobsmacked to see a bunch of un-named actors who probably haven't had any acting lessons in their life time do a fantastic job in front of the
camera. Yeah, there might have been a few times the dialogue kinda left me scratching my head, but overall Gary, Brian and Michelle's
performances were exciting to watch.
Another thing you very rarely seen in independent films is that creepy atmospheric smoke effect, like when the zombies slowly walk out of the
smoke on the road, which was a breathtaking moment. The way it was shot and how the zombies moved just before they charged at Brian and
Gary, was spooky and Brian and Gary's reactions were very realistic. If a bunch of people covered in blood, chewing on bloody limbs, walking on
the interstate with abandoned cars for miles all of a sudden started running at you at full force, while you have a gun in your hand, what would
you do?. (A) Stand your ground and shoot them one by one, or (B) run back to the car flat out with your gun pointed back at them and firing round
after round? If that was me, I would take option (B) any day. What do you have to prove if you stand and fight something that's already dead? But
you don't see shit like that in films nowadays; everyone has to be the hero and every bullet fired is a headshot. Deadlands: The Rising cuts all
that bullshit out and focus on what any normal everyday person would do, even if it was in a real life-threatening crisis.
Gary Ugarek's Deadlands: The Rising is a film that any J.R Bookwalter, George Romero or Dan O'Bannon fan is going to get right into. Deadlands:
The Rising is now released on DVD from TempeDVD. Yes, that's right, J.R Bookwalter knows talent when he sees it and has picked up this title. Pull
out the hammer kiddies and break open your piggy banks 'cause I highly recommend you buy this DVD and check it out for yourself. You won't be
disappointed that's for damn sure, and all you gorehounds will have something new to look forward too.
