It’s fitting really, Dario Argento has always been called “The Italian Hitchcock”, so when the opportunity pops up to make a Telemovie, what does
he base it on? Hitchcock films!
Giulio is a film student living by himself in an apartment. Across the street in another apartment, Sasha lives with her mother. Guilio can’t help
himself spying into Sasha’s apartment, but one night he hears more than he bargained for coming from across the street. Sasha’s mother has
been murdered!
Guilio decides to do a bit of investigating, and accidentally runs into Sasha and a friend at the local video shop, where he finds out they’re
Hitchcock fans, as well as the clerk in the store. The more Guilio thinks about the murder, the more he concludes that someone is trying to do
Hitchcock copycat murders. But is this the case? Or is something else happening?
I admit I know sweet FUCK ALL about Hitchcock. Psycho and The Birds are all I have seen of his work. Obviously, there are references to Hitchcock
films throughout the whole thing (David Lynch’s Blue Velvet, Brian De Palma & even Argento himself are referenced as well), but main plot points
concerning Hitchcock’s work are told to us, so a background in his films simply isn’t necessary. As a TV mystery movie, it flows along fairly smoothly,
and I found the whole thing to be the most mysterious movie Argento has crafted since Opera. Some scenes get quite tense, and the last 15
minutes were absolutely riveting!
However, don’t come in looking for Argento’s trade mark gore and violence. It isn’t here, except for Sasha’s mother’s death. That doesn’t stop this
from being an exceptionally well made thriller, with the main emphasis on mystery and character. The movie, as a whole, almost plays out like a
play, which works very well in it's favour.
A little bit of script tweaking here and there would have helped though. The opening sequence is never explained at all, has nothing to do with the
storyline, and then pops up later as a dream. It just doesn’t make any sense to me, or maybe I missed something?
Anchor Bay has done a nice job with this film. The picture and sound are nice and clear, however, one minor gripe is it’s a bit light in the Extra’s
department, a short behind the scenes featurette and an Argento Bio. An interview with the man himself, explaining his concept of the film, would
have been appreciated. I urge anyone looking for a good character driven thriller to definitely check this out.
