A quick search for CAT III movies would certainly bring up results for The Untold Story and Ebola Syndrome. Whilst not as over the top or gory as
either of these titles, Dr Lamb is just as sleazy. Paving the way for Bunman: The Untold Story but no less disturbing. Based on true life murders it’
s a grueling story of depravity and madness. What Dr Lamb lacks in gore, it certainly makes up for in scenes of necrophilia and abuse, oh and the
odd bit of comedy thrown in the mix!
We first see Lam Gor-yu (Simon Yam) as a quiet child who is constantly beaten by his parents, Lam has some very odd habits like watching his
sister in the bath and peeping on his parents making love. When he is caught they just brush it away saying it’s all part of ‘growing up,’ making
him believe it is normal but it’s not until later on when Lam is caught for murders that they turn on him and blame his childhood habits for the
disgusting crimes he commits. now an adult, Lam works as a taxi driver picking up women at nights and murdering them. Meanwhile a worker in a
photo store becomes disturbed by a large number of sickening pictures of naked women in various poses that Lam takes while he is 'working' on
his victims, he tells his boss and the police set a trap for Lam and he is caught, his house is searched and ‘evidence’ is found all over the house.
Lam and all his family are taken in and ‘interrogated’ and beaten by the police Lam finally snaps and confesses his crimes. In a series of flashbacks,
we now see Lam picking up women on stormy nights. His first victim makes him snap as she calls him names then pukes in his car, he beats her
unconscious and then strangles her to death with some wire and hides the body in his house. When his family is out, he poses and ‘toys’ with the
body, eventually he mutilates and dismembers the corpse. The other girls are killed in a similar manner and for some reason end up with breast
mutilation, Lam appears to be trying to ‘better’ at the procedure each time. His final victim is a virgin student girl who he murders, marries (yes you
read that right) and then has sex with her dead body for 30-40 minutes in front of a camera.
Dr Lamb is pretty much a straight forward serial killer movie, although nearly all of the film is shown through flashbacks it’s fairly easy to
understand. Whilst not an overly gory film, it does contain some very disturbing scenes of breasts being cut off and deals quite heavily with the
subject of necrophilia and police brutality, these elements of course give it a CAT III title. As always with this type of title it’s difficult to feel
anything for Lam even for all his beatings by family and police you never feel sorry for him. Simon yam who plays Lam does a great job, you actual
think he’s quite a normal guy until he first goes mad, and boy does he… the first time you see him change its almost quite scary. The only other
remarkable character in the film is inspector Lee played by Danny Lee, the others do a less convincing job and the lady police officer just seems to
be puking throughout most of the film. The photography with use of dark colors and the fact it’s nearly always raining gives a real depressing and
harrowing feel to the film.
It’s difficult not to compare it to Bunman which was much more over the top. Dr Lamb has quite a similar story but I wouldn’t say it was as nasty a
film but it’s been produced with more style.
The version of the DVD I reviewed had been cut, there aren’t that many close ups and many of the dismemberment scenes happen off screen, but
a very rare Spanish version is supposed to be fully uncut for those who really need to see this in full detail. Quite a few of the subtitles were
misspelled and seemed to appear and disappear rather quickly.
