My God!! Italian WIP (Women In Prison) films don’t come any more generic than this! It’s got everything we know and love about the genre. A
camp full of females in the middle of the jungle, a shitload of full frontal nudity, whippings, beatings, lesbian sex, what more could you ask for?
A plot wouldn’t be too bad actually. It is way too easy to tell just by watching Escape from Hell that it was thrown together to just to make a quick
buck. The script would’ve easily been written in about 20 minutes, it really is that simple.
A prison camp in the middle of the jungle is due to receive a new Warden, and once he turns up, he is one sadistic, cranky old fuck. The poor girls
are working there asses off clearing trees and stuff to make a new pathway leading to the camp. The guards look at this as an excuse to get some
of the girls alone and rape them. Hell, one of the girls gets tag teamed so hard she has to go to the camp doctor! The doctor himself is a burned
out alcoholic who proceeds to seduce the girl and have sex with her, even though she was sent there straight after the rape!
Anyways fast forward a little bit, And all the girls are sick of the abuse & treatment the new warden is dishing out and convince the doctor to help
them escape from the camp. The new Warden has a big phobia of disease so the doctor passes a drug around the camp that makes all the girl get
huge red blotches on there skin and spew up blood. The doctor tells the Warden that it’s some type of Plague that is making the girls crook, and
that they all have to be quarantined in the middle of nowhere. This provides the perfect excuse for the girls to escape and on the way out, the
doctor gives all the ladies the vaccine to cure them.
So then we have the typical scenes of the girls running through the jungle with the help of the doctor, the guards catching up, a big shoot out
ensues, the end.
This is what I mean, the plot is interchangeable with at least 5 of the other WIP films that spring to mind (I could find more with a bit more
thought).That being said however, Escape From Hell makes up some of it’s shortcomings by being one of the most sleaziest examples of the
genre. I’m not kidding! More bare female skin is shown than any other WIP film I can think of, Jess Franco’s efforts included! Some of the sex
scenes border on hardcore, and looking at the way they were hacked together in the editing room, I wouldn’t be surprised if a hardcore version
had been made.
Still Escape from Hell is a fucking terrible mess of a movie! The overdubs are terrible, even by Italian film standards, the most basic camera angles
ever are used, and don’t get me started on the acting! A quick look at IMDB confirms my theory, only 3 or 4 of the cast members have more than a
handful of credits to there name, and it really shows. But when 99% of the females in the film are disrobed at least once it doesn’t really matter
especially when some of them have great talent just sprouting off there chests!
As for the DVD itself, this would have to be the closest thing Troma has done to a bare bones disc. Extra’s are limited to 4 trailers and the old add
for Lloyd Kaufman’s book. That’s it! No Troma Intelligence test, No studio and No bloody radiation march (thank god!) even though it’s listed on the
back cover! The transfer of the film is fairly dismal as well. Although the image is clear enough, the colors are horribly washed out, and it’s easy to
tell it ripped straight of a VHS! They didn’t even get of the fucking Wizard Video title screen! (Note: Wizard was an American video company, like
Palace or Starbase in Australia.)
A pretty piss poor DVD release of a fairly average film. Recommended for WIP completists, Ajita Wilson completists (if there are any?) or people
who can’t get there hands on Hardcore porn, everyone else will think it’s a big, fat floater. I found it pretty cool, but then I've been told my taste is
in my ass anyways.
