I was looking forward to watching this film, from the snippets Id heard about it Evil Dead Trap sounded like a film along the lines of cult classic
Cube with its ingenious traps and great death scenes. I’m a big fan of Asian horror/gore films but sadly this is one of the weaker films I have seen
in a while.
The stunning Nami Tsuchiya played by Miyuki Ono is the star of a late night television show who receives a mysterious package containing a snuff
video which shows some poor girl being horribly mutilated (and a great Zombie Flesh Eaters effect, more of that later), The tape also shows
directions leading to an abandoned army base but just as she says ‘not another one of these videos’ we see images of Nami herself in the film.
Nami Recruits some of her fellow workers to go and investigate the video tape and try to produce a story that will make her famous. Once at the
base it’s not long before Nami’s friends are bumped off in increasing gruesome ways, and are stalked by a mysterious figure.
Evil Dead Trap starts off pretty quickly, there’s a great expectation building up after the first death which shows one of Nami’s friends being
impaled on various blades, a sequence which is quite drawn out to give that extra effect, infact all the killings in this film are quite imaginative and
gory, there’s the scary and mysterious looking killer stalking them, there’s even a few sex scenes in the film plus a drawn out rape sequence (I
didn’t know this from watching the film but after some research some of the actors are actually Japanese porn stars) so what’s not to like about
Evil Dead Trap? Sadly once the lead characters have been killed, which happens pretty much half way through the film there seemed to be little
else happening, Nami meets a man in the building who claims to be looking for his brother but the conversations and their attempted escape is far
to lengthy. With out giving the story away I was disappointed by the ending, what started off for me as a great slasher film ended very sadly in
some pretty screwed up low budget x-file episode.
The title of the film has very little to do with the Evil Dead films most of you will know, although there appears to be quite a few homage’s to
various films in there, the music for instance is the same few bars played over and over whilst I found this infuriatingly irritating its obviously a
tribute to some Italian films. Most of the effects in this film are great, and its clear most of the budget was spent on this, the snuff tape that Nami
receives contains a girl tied up with a blade being pushed towards one of her eyes, sadly it cuts into black and white but you do see the blade
entering the eye and all the fluid/blood coming out which looks really cool! All of the other death sequences containing similar bloody effects, which
are done in great detail. One other sequence to mention is about the last death which involves Nami trying to rescue one of her friends from a trap
involving a crossbow but just when you think she is safe (and you breathe a sigh of relief) a blade comes from the ceiling and almost splits the girl
in half. Again all the deaths are well done in the film, its just a shame the last portion of the film is quite boring otherwise I could of recommended
this more highly.
