If I had to briefly describe Female Convict Scorpion: Jailhouse 41 I'd have to say "Director Shunya Ito masterfully blends Arthouse with Grindhouse
in this finely crafted well thought out W.I.P film. It is a surreally shot movie that veers this genres low brow reputation to loftier more intelligent
heights".

Not to say that I'm obverse to the occasional Jess Franco crotch zooms and over the top excesses of female showering shenanigans or lesbo
lickfests of it's American and European cousins.

This great film is in a category of it's own, director Ito makes even the scuzziest scenes look poetic in this
Black momma, White momma / Escape
from Alcatraz
/ Thelma and Louise Hybrid that can be enjoyed by Art snob and sleaze-hound alike to the same degree. Jodorowsky meets Sergio
Leone on Acid if you will.

After the excitement of the Toei logo and waves crashing across your screen die down, we follow a dizzying camera shot down into some dark,
damp, god forgiven recess onto our heroine Matsu or Sasori which is Japanese for scorpion played beautifully by the exquisite Meiko Kaji of the
Lady Snowblood and Alley Cat series. Apparently Matsu's been in this crap cave of isolation for a year, sent there by the evil warden Goda (Fumio
Watanbee of
School of the Holy Beast and Lonewolf and Cub's Sword of Vengance) after Matsu removed his eye in the first installment; Female
Convict Scorpion #701
.

As the camera courts Matsu to the soundtrack of her sharpening a spoon into a shiv, Warden Goda and his bumbling companions enter Matsu's
solitary cess pit to inform her of his impending promotion to leave this jail shit pit even though he's left more than a smear with his intentions of
mentally breaking Matsu as she's proved to be the main cactus in his arse.

Matsu is then hosed down (unfortunately clothed) and dragged out to a line up for a visiting patronizing inspector. Goda thinks Matsu is finally
broken down after her months of degradation and adds her to the end of the line, but as Goda and the Inspector get close, Matsu utilizes her
remaining strength and lunges forward with her before sharpened shiv trying to remove Goda's remaining eye but is sabotaged by his glasses.
Although this action is brutal and suprising enough to make the Inspector fall down pissing his pants in the process.

This in return causes the prisoners to riot and obviously pisses of Goda like a Japanese schoolgirl without a pair of clean white panty’s. Goda has
been humiliated and maybe even his promotion jeopardized, so in retaliation sends the female inmates to hard labor at a quarry with Matsu tied to
a crucifix shaped tree branch until she is then raped by 5 of Goda's goons, to be shamed beyond redemption by her fellow Inmates. Hence forth
they try to stamp poor Matsu to death in the back of the prison transportation vehicle until the guards pull over to see what’s happening. Bad
Mistake, as once again the near death Matsu springs forward to overtake the guards with the help of her fellow inmates in return winning back
their respect.

I'm not going to describe the storyline any further as I don't want to spoil things as well as the fact I’m a lazy fuck. But once the inmates escape I’
m not sure if it was my acid or director Ito's that kicked in as on their escape, the leaves change color to brown and things take on a supernatural
flavor.

If your familiar with Meiko Kaji from the better known
Lady Snowblood films you'd know how great and beautiful an actress she is. In Female
Convict Scorpion #41 you barely remember her delivering any lines at all, although director Shunya Ito says "In the second film (FCS #41) the
principal character pronounces barely two sentences, two very short sentences. The Dialogue was superfluous in this film. Only the acts counted."

Exactamundo as Shunya Ito utilizes awesome cinematography and action sequences as in a latter scene where the inmates are gathered around
a campfire and the camera spins 360% implying they all share the same fate. As well priory noted symbolism rains down onto you like your a star
of some Bukkake porno.

I'm not too overly familiar with Shunya Ito's work except for the first 3 of these series he helmed, but I understand he began his career as a
protege under Teruo Ishii. In this series he successfully and seamlessly combines exploitation with Art where better known directors like Abel
Ferrara often fail. Ito also controversially beat Akira Kurosawa's Ran for best foreign film at the 1985 Academy awards. But it’s a shame he didn't
stick to his roots (well for scuzz mongers like me anyway.)

There are 4 official entries into this series which Ito shot 3,
FCS #701, FCS#41, Beast Stable and Grudge song which were originally based from
a manga comic. Some sequels were also shot in the 90's.

I personally think
Female Convict Scorpion: Jailhouse 41 as best in the series with the perfect mixture of everything you could wish for in a WIP
film concluding with a satisfying ending. As someone once quoted Crypto-post-feminist-splatter at it's best.

This region 1 Japanese DVD available but it doesn't come with English subs. So for us non Japanese speaking folk you might as well get a blind
man to read the bumps on my cock.
