Our friends at DV1 have provided another piece of 1950s exploitation here with the Female Jungle. Also known as The Hangover this is a
reasonably gritty tale of murder.
On a dark night outside a seedy bar, a stunning blonde actress is found brutally strangled on the footpath. Detective Jack Stevens, an off-duty cop
indulging in a night of serious drinking has become the prime suspect for the murder. But with no memory of that night and unable to confirm or
deny eye-witness reports that he left the bar with the victim, Stevens begins his own investigation.
As the evidence mounts against him, Stevens begins his own list of suspects: a writer preparing to work with the actress, a troubled artist who
drew her portrait, the artist's wife who works at the bar where the murder took place and the artist's beautiful mistress, all of whom had motive
and opportunity to commit the heinous crime. With time running out to clear his name, Stevens must piece together the deadly puzzle and uncover
the shocking truth before the cold-blooded killer strikes again.
The main reason this film is remembered today is the fact it was the first film appearance of sex symbol Jayne Mansfield, (who was payed $150 for
her performance), but the rest of the cast is equally stellar including John Carradine and legendary tough guy Lawrence Tierney in the lead.
Computer game fans may also notice Eve Brent, (under the name Jean Lewis), the voice of the priestess Akara in Diablo II in a small role.
Laurence Tierney really didn't have to act here, playing the drunken tough guy who may or may not have done something terrible while under the
influence he basically just had to show up and be himself. John Carradine is, as always, quite professional and fun to watch. I have to admit, it's
odd seeing him in a non horror role. As for Ms Mansfield, she was never known for her acting ability and here she does what she did best, provides
eye candy as the slutty blonde involved with two of the leads.
Bruno VeSota does a reasonably good with the script from writer/producer/star Burt Kaiser but he was a much better actor than a director,
(though he did direct the genuinely creepy “The Brain Eaters”). He never lets things drag, but he also never really shows any flair either. The
result is an effective enough piece of film noir with the exploitative elements amped up as much as possible in a mainstream ‘50s film.
As with DV1's other similar releases there's no special features included, but that's usually the case with a budget title like this. The print quality is
quite good and that's the main thing with releases like this.
This is another solid release of a vintage exploitation piece from DV1. For those who like this sort of thing it's definitely recommended. Film
historians may find it of worth too to see Jayne Mansfield's debut.
