Back in the early 80's when my family first got a VCR, I started to rent all the horror movies I could. At that time there were only three Friday's and
it seemed like I was the only Jason fan around: friends, family, the media all told me how bad these films were and in the case of the media how
bad they were for me. Lucky for me my parents still let me watch them. I remember when I first asked my mum if I could rent out Friday the 13th
(1980) she said, “You can watch it you want too, but if you have nightmares or are grossed out you’re on your own.” I have never looked back.
So many nights alone in front of the TV after everyone else had gone to bed watching the latest horror or some old classic. A lot of fans do not
seem to like this installment but I have a soft spot for it and from what the extras inform me it is the biggest money maker in the series next to
Freddy Vs. Jason (2003).
Picking up one day after the events of Friday the 13th Part II (1981), deformed serial killer Jason Voorhees (Richard Brooker) has survived his
attack at the hands of Paul and Ginny and has gone from a runtish redneck to a towering juggernaut. He heads to a local store to change his
clothes and kill the store owners before moving on to a nearby lake front property named Higgins Haven. In the meantime a group of friends led by
a girl named Chris (Dana Kimmell) who has had a run in with Jason a few years before (lucky lady indeed) arrive on the scene. Among the group
number are some hippies and everybody’s favourite nerd fan-boy Shelly (Larry Zerner). It seems as if Chris has come to the lake to face her fears
but little does she and the rest of the gang know that Jason has taken refuge in the barn. Before the main action starts Shelly and a girl named
Vera (Catherine Parks) head to a local store to get some supplies where they run afoul of three bikers, getting away by the skin of their teeth. Ali
(Nick Savage) is the kind of biker not to be made a fool of, so he and his woman Fox (Gloria Charles) plus sidekick Loco (Kevin O'Brien) head to the
barn for some payback. Before they can do any real damage though the trio meets up with Jason and after this under card bout Jason sets his
sights on the main event. From here on in it’s the fast moving slasher film that we all know and love, and along the way Jason picks up his now
trademark hockey mask in between killing off cast members as we head to the final showdown.
Steve Miner encores from Part II (the only director so far to do so) and here’s a trivia note: Steve Miner is the only director so far to direct films in
two of the big horror franchises of the 80's Friday the 13th Part II (1981) & Friday the 13th Part III (1983) and Halloween H20 (1998), he
knows what a F13 fan wants in a film and gives it to us: lots of kills, nudity and keeps the action moving and never lets it get boring.
The cast all range from bad to decent. Again from what the extras tell us the focus was on the 3D and production more than the acting but hey
who goes to see a Friday for the acting? we get a big body count with Jason using all sorts of different objects to deal out the death, items such as
a spear gun, knitting needle, and even his bare hands, some of the kills come off a bit "flat" in the non-3D prints and I would love to have seen it in
3D. Speaking of which, the film is filled with heaps of 3D shots from the obvious - the kills and scares to some what the?? things: yo-yo, pop corn,
juggling fruit - why do you need that sort of thing in horror movie? Richard Brooker makes a great Jason too, a big fast moving machine who just
wants to destroy anyone unfortunate enough to cross his path.
The 3rd of what I hope is soon to be all the films in special editions is again like Part 2’s special edition, decent but not quite what we fans have
been waiting for. It is still the cut version and from what I have read we are missing out on some good stuff: “Some of the deaths were edited in
order to avoid an "X" rating, including: Andy’s death, which showed his right leg being cut off and his stomach being torn open; Vera’s death was
cut of bloodshed and her subsequent reaction (this was cut for supposedly looking “too real”); Edna’s death was cut of excessive blood flow;
Chili’s impalement with the red-hot poker was cut of steaming blood hitting the floor; Debbie’s original death showed blood spraying across her
chest and face.” Give us uncut! The Region 1 release comes with a 3D print of the film but sadly we miss out on this on the Region 4 release.
The extras are:
- FRESH CUTS: NEW TALES FROM “FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 3”: a another short but very interesting look at the film’s production, we get a look at
Stan Winston’s unused Jason make-up, learn that the original idea was PART 2’s survivor Ginny Field (Amy Steel) in a PART 5 type story and also
the Alternate ending that most fans have seen the stills from (would have been a great extra).
- LEGACY OF THE MASK: a 9 minute feature of how Jason has evolved over the films from a final chair jump to the main villain to an icon of pop
culture, we hear how they come to pick the hockey mask and what happened to the PART 3 hockey mask and a few other secrets from the set of
PART 3.
- SLASHER FILMS: GOING FOR THE JUGULAR: yes again a way too short at 7 or so minutes look at slasher films, featuring TOM SAVINI, TONY TODD
plus a heap of cast and crew members sharing their thoughts on the F13 series and horror films in general, it’s a great little piece that could have
been much longer but what we do get is great.
- We also get LOST TALES FROM CAMP BLOOD PART 2 & 3 they follow on from the short shown on PART 2’s extras, ok for a onetime watch but can’t
help but thinking we could have got something more to do with the F13 series them some short movies, to finish out the extras we get another
great trailer in the way only the 80’s could give us.
This is another decent special edition DVD but could be so much more but I still recommend heading out and getting a copy because it’s still a huge
improvement over the old barebones release and if they sell well maybe Paramount will finally give us uncut releases.
