Welcome to the world of Takashi Miike! And a welcome it was for me to as I have to say this is my first full sitting of a Takashi Miike film having only
seen bits and pieces of Ichi - The Killer, Visitor Q, Audition I wasn’t that sure I knew what I was getting myself into…
Shosuke Tanihara stars as Riki Fudoh, youngest son of a yakuza boss who to settle a dispute with a rival gang murders his other son, Riki’s older
brother Ryu. Fast forward some years and Riki vows revenge on his brother’s death by bringing down his fathers gang by recruiting his fellow
school children as assassins.
Whilst this might sound like a fairly typical yakuza/gang story let me that some of the scenes in this film the most surprising and shocking I have
seen in some time, the first few opening minutes gives us a bloody shoot out, no great surprises there but fast forward to one of the ‘stars’ of the
film one of the schoolgirl assassins has a very novel way of dispatching her victims, and you couldn’t think of this idea if you tried, she opens her
legs, unzips her pants and uses a blow dart/gun which she places into her vagina and shoots darts through the heads of people, like I say you
couldn’t even dream of it.
Without giving too much of the story away Miike continually shocks his viewers with over the top scenes that wont sound much to write about but
seeing them on screen gives you very powerful and shocking images that show how good the director is, for example the two small children who
unsuccessfully attempt to kill one of the rival gang in a shopping mall with a handgun , only killing one of his bodyguards the children drop the gun
and try to smile and offer the guy a sandwich, he responds back with a grin, in the next scene we see two bags outside a house which contain the
remains of the children. Again this doesn’t sound like much but its just one of many scenes of violence and sex that jump from being quite normal
to shocking, acid drinks, child assassins, vaginal weapons, hermaphrodites this film has pretty much everything.
For me this was a great film to watch, I’m used to watching a lot of no brainer zombie/gore stuff so it was a good change to see a film with more
depth, I didn’t know what to expect before I watched this, id heard of the title but knew little of the story. Again I review this on its own as I can’t
compare it to any of Miikes other work at the moment but all in all it’s a great film, I was really surprised how much I enjoyed it.
