This is actually a rather decent yet openly loose-ended adaptation of a book that caused me to read with the lights on for a full week when I first
discovered it back in middle school. Originally written by Peter Straub as a novel, the story is everything a horror fan could ask for and a lot more.
The movie is never as good as the book, but this is not bad by any means.

The tale is based on the meeting of four social, sexual repressed lads (The Chowder Society) in a small New England town that now, as old men
(Astail. This in a small step helps them cope and helps keep hidden a dark an eerie past. Soon they are haunted by a beautiful yet horrific ghost
(Krige) from there past that seeks revenge of the four, causing her to sleep in unrest for many years. Soon they decide that the truth must be
known by all, so that the nightmares may be stopped and the terror can laid to rest.

It's really hard to write a lot about this film without truly giving everything away. All I can say is that is worth buying, borrowing, or renting it and
you should also read the Straub's novel. Word of advice, read the book first then see the movie.

The special effects are gruesome, yet tasteful and come in at the exact moment that one would want them to. Filmed as a story within a story, this
film is easily told and does not leave you lost at any point of the film. Eerie... Excellent!
