At the beginning of this film one character tells the titular character, “It’d take an army to get dope out of Harlem”. Sounds like a challenge to me,
and it definitely gets treated as such by our hero Gordon - particularly in a 70s blaxploitation flick like this baby.

I love blaxploitation films, so I came at this expecting brilliance. Paul Winfield puts in a bravura performance as Gordon, an angry Vietnam vet
whose wife Roberta has succumbed to the allure of smack. Now he’s on a one man mission to wipe junk off the streets of Harlem, specifically
starting with pusher and all-round bastard Big Pink, whose pastel pink Rolls Royce with white-walled tyres has to be seen to be believed for its
incredible breath-taking tastelessness.

Gordon assembles a bunch of his ex-army buddies, after being kicked half to death by Spanish Harry – another nasty piece of work, and a major
player in his own right, and proceeds to wage his war, and it is fucking entertaining. Let’s face it, any film where characters refer to each other as
“jive-ass motherfuckers” and “righteous dudes” is going to be a good film in my book. Directed by Ossie Davis (President Kennedy in
Bubba Ho-
Tep
), Gordon’s War doesn’t try to be anything other than simply an exercise in keeping its audience highly entertained – something it does in
spades. If you can’t dig on this bad boy, check your pulse… you may well be dead.

Fur coats and pimp hats are definitely the go here. Not to mention cool music, and great, nasty, mean-spirited violence. Get this film now and love
it. Thank you superhappyfun.com for keeping this film in circulation –
Gordon’s War is a lost genre masterpiece that needs much greater
distribution and attention.
