Special Dead is a fairly simple storyline which involves a group of mentally and physically handicapped teenage kids that attend a ranch called
Camp Special Dude. Just when they thought they had enough problems in life the ranch becomes infested by flesh eating zombies, while the
livestock becomes a smorgasbord for the undead, the camp leaders and kids try to find away off the mountain without being noticed by the hungry
ghouls. Unfortunately the plan doesn't go so well for the remaining survivors, they soon find themselves split up in small numbers and surrounded
by zombies, leaving them with only two choices either fight or be eaten.
When I saw the trailer for Thomas Phillips and Sean Simmons Special Dead I had to get my hands on a copy as soon as possible. How could any
zombie fan resist watching a full length movie about zombies chasing down teenage kids with mental, physical disabilities and chewing the shit out
of them? Special Dead isn't a serious zombie film, but its definitely a unique movie that no other film-maker has even attempted to try. The
Special Dead is everything what a horror fan wants, it’s filled with sex, blood, guts and one of the most funniest humoured scripts that not only
disrespects those who're handicapped that are either living but also the dead, yes that's right people you heard it. If that person who suffers from
a mental handicap when they slowly turn into a zombie they don't just become dead they become a new breed of zombie called retardead. For
example someone who suffers from Tourette’s Syndrome sill has to suffer with his/hers disability even in the dead life. I thought I had seen it all,
but hearing one particular zombie walking around screaming out for no obvious reason "Cock, Shit and Fuck Stains" while stumbling and chasing
down its prey had me in stitches suffocating with laughter.
The cast in Special Dead are obviously all unknown, but despite this movie being a low budget film the acting was very enjoyable to watch. I could
be here all day picking out scenes of what I enjoyed watching in this film and how the actors portrayed each of their characters. But my top 3
moments would have to be at the near beginning of the movie were Thomas Crnkovich plays a character named Buck who I think suffers from
Cerebral Palsy is trying to sing along to camp leader Oswald (Andy Allen) playing a guitar around the camp fire which is titled "You're all retarded
anyway". Actor Anthony Rutowicz character has so many memorable moments, especially when he tells everyone that his ex-girlfriend had pancake
size nipples while he tries cracking onto his wheelchair bound girlfriend Dale (Gia Franzia). Actor Larrs Jackson playing the role of Cameron "Snuff"
Stone who owns Camp Special Dude, his tale of riding a zombie horse was hilarious to listen too. The rest of the cast will have you grinning from
ear to ear and chuckling with laughter from the beginning and right to the very end.
The gore factor is fairly high in this little gem. You will witness many bloody and gory scenes where zombies either have their heads torn off their
shoulders, flesh torn from helpless disabled kids shoulders and necks, faces smashed in by all different objects, a 2 minute hardcore zombie death
scene with a pair of nun chucks, bloody limbs, decapitations, zombies eating the livestock and it’s not a zombie film without a few shotgun blast or
a chainsaw scene. Gore hounds will get their daily intake of blood and guts with this little beauty.
As for the ass and tit factor it’s fairly low, sadly you only get to see actress Amy Wade getting her top off at the beginning of the movie. Later on in
the movie you do get to see a few scenes where both actresses Amy Wade and Haneka Haynes are bending over showing their cute little asses
off to the camera. Unfortunately for those who are hoping to maybe see a bit of retard tit or fluff, sorry guys think again.
The score itself is as brutal as the movie itself, as a lot of you guys know most indie films have shitty scores sounding like pings, beeps and
someone grunting in the background like if they're taking a huge shit. Well this isn't the case for Special Dead, its score is heavy as fuck. Those
who are right into the metal scene are going to enjoy watching and listening to this movie. Lets face the facts, a movie always looks and sounds
better when you have heavy metal layered over a scene where you see someone going to town with their fists UFC style on a zombie. Most of all
listening to actor Andy Allen whaling it out on the acoustic guitar around the camp fire and singing a song called "You're all retarded anyway" was
hilarious, it just put that extra icing on the cake within the score.
In the DVD extras you do get a good amount of great features with this DVD. A short behind the scenes footage called Riding the Short Bus which
runs for about 3:47minutes, a picture slideshow of all the zombies and cast and crew of Special Dead and a Trailer. There is also a hidden egg
located on the DVD too, which will get a good laugh out of.
The Special Dead is truly a work of art, its not a movie to be taken serious or even to heart from those who suffer from with a mental or physical
disability. I had a great time watching this movie on a horror, comedy and independent level. If you don't end up getting any enjoyment out of this
movie, well I'm sorry to say you must be either full blown retarded or just blind and deaf. Special Dead is independent cinema at its very finest
which will leave many people shocked, gob-smacked or slightly offended to those who suffer from a disability. The Special Dead comes highly
