The Boogens
VHS/APPROX. 95 MINS/1982/USA R18+
Back in the early 1880s, a coal mine in Silver City was closed down after the mine caved in, trapping and killing 25 miners. No one knew what
exactly caused the cave in over 80 years, until now. A four man crew goes into the mine and blasts open the mine again, not realizing that they
also open a dark secret that someone tried to keep quiet all that time. But now it's too late. Ancient, dark creatures called Boogens that have long
tentacles and a hunger for human flesh have now broken loose and started terrorizing the community of Silver City once again.
The Boogens is your cheesy 80s creature feature film, with piss poor acting and creature effects that look like sock muppet's from Sesame Street.
There wasn't too much happening in this film; most of the time you mainly see a poodle barking and scratching at doors, a few screams here and
there, and a little bit of nudity. That's about it really. The Boogens kinda looked like long neck snapping turtles with a lot of sharp teeth, but they
also had long tentacles with claws. They use them to reach out and grab their prey, before chewing them to bits, and thankfully you won't be
seeing any mutated creatures like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in this film. There were a few good gore moments in The Boogens, the
poodle getting ripped though the heating vents in the dining room was a real treat to watch, but overall nothing much happens at all.
I didn't really know any of the cast, but their performances were somewhat enjoyable to watch. Rebecca Balding played the lead role of Trish
Michaels, and I can see why director James L. Conway gave her the lead role, after watching the shower scene and fireplace scene "very cute
indeed". I don't think I have seen any other work from director Conway, but after seeing The Boogens I am kinda interested in seeing if his work
has gotten better or worse.
The Boogens is not officially released on DVD, but you might be able to find a VHS copy in a bargain bin at your local video store. If not, it should
be still on your video stores shelves for rent. I don't recommend you rush out and buy this movie straight away, but if this film was ever to get
released on DVD, I hope they brighten up the night time scenes. There were times I had a hard time making out what was what from the VHS
tape, but then again it could of been the shitty VHS copy i had. I think I would of enjoyed this film a hell of a lot more if the creatures were actually
human size, kinda like Humanoids from the Deep. Then The Boogens would definitely be worth watching and owning, no doubt about it.
So those who get a kick out of watching cheesy 80s creature feature films, then The Boogens is definitely the creature feature film you wanna
rent. And even if you don't like cheesy 80s creature feature films there could be a good chance you might get a slight kick out of this film. But truly,
I can't see The Boogens getting released on DVD anytime soon, so all you creature feature lovers out there, will just have to hunt around for a
VHS copy for the time being.

The "Boogens" are scaly monsters that look somewhat like giant turtles with lots of sharp, nasty teeth. They are released from an abandoned, boarded-up silver mine in Colorado and proceed to do away with character after character Written by {jlshan@ix.netcom.com}
