The Children of Ravensback
DVD/APPROX. 90 MINS/1980/USA UNRATED
Two workers at the Yankee Power Plant in Ravensback decide to head off to the local pub for a few beers, but before they leave, they forget to
double check the gauges to see if everything is fine. Minutes after they leave the power plant, the gauges go haywire and a thick yellow gas starts
leaking from a pipe. A short while later, a bus filled with children who are on their way home, is surrounded by the toxic yellow gas on the road,
and the bus driver, not thinking anything of it, keeps driving. Later that afternoon Sheriff Hart (Gil Rogers) finds the school bus empty and still
running on the side of the road near the cemetery, he then starts driving around asking the towns people if they’ve seen the kids. No one has, so
Sheriff Hart decides to play it safe and gets the two town drunks, Hank (Edward Terry) and Frank (Peter Maloney), and his deputy to set up a road
block on the interstate and stop those coming in and leaving the town. That following night the Ravensback's children return as black finger nailed
flesh burning zombies from the yellow radiation cloud, and skin begins to peel and fall off the limbs of anyone they touch. Sheriff Hart follows the
trail of dead burnt carcasses in the hopes of finding out what exactly is going on in the town of Ravensback.
The Children (aka The Children of Ravensback) is a golden oldie that has finally made its way onto DVD, thanks to Troma's all region 25th
Anniversary Edition DVD. Now this movie isn’t a gorefest flick and the children don't hunger for human flesh, they more like greet their victims with a
hug and a smile and as soon as their hands touch their victim’s skin it starts to melt and peel off. Put it this way, sunblock ain’t going to do shit.
The make-up work is awesome for a low budget film, Ann Dalton & Carla White did an excellent job on the skin peeling effects, which makes The
Children really enjoyable to watch every time someone gets burnt to a crisp. The crew of The Children went directly to working on the original
Friday The 13th feature film after this, and not only that the music was done by Harry Manfredini which sound so similar to the music from Friday
The 13th. If you drop the "chi chi chi ahh ahh ahh" from Friday The 13th movie, you will notice it is exactly like music from The Children.
The DVD is presented in a (1.33:1) full-screen frame, so unfortunately they left a lot of the scratches on the negative so it’s a bit of a poorly
remastered version. The sound is not too bad, though from time to time it does fade in and out, plus you get a bit of static every now and then. As
for the extras you get to see a few short interviews with Albright, Gil Rogers and David Platt, there is even a full length audio commentary from the
writer/producer Carlton Albright included on the DVD. And it wouldn't be a Troma title if it didn't have the famous introduction by Troma's founder
Lloyd Kaufman.
Those who love classic films like The Village of the Damned and Night Of The Living Dead will probably enjoy The Children. But if you are looking
for a full on gorefest shocker, well sorry guys this isn’t the movie you want to watch, unless you are sick of watching the same old shit over and
over again, then this movie is for you. It’s an enjoyable film, just don't expect blood, guts and gore, and prepare yourself for cheesy 80's acting
followed up by awesome make-up effects.

A busload of children has disappeared from the quiet New England town of Ravensback, and Sheriff Billy Hart is on the case. A short while later, he manages to track down the kids, but unfortunately they seem to have been transformed into murderous zombies by a cloud of radioactive gas. How can he stop the killer tykes before they destroy the town? Written by Jean-Marc Rocher {rocher@fiberbit.net}
