"It's you against them!"
The Freakmaker
DVD/APPROX. 92 MINS/1974/USA R18+
A University professor named Nolter (Donald Pleasence) has been experimenting with plant DNA in hope of creating a new "mutation." The goal is
to blend together human and plant life forms, so he can begin an all new species (Why he wants to do that, I have no fucking clue?). The professor
first creates a few animal/plant hybrids, like a huge Venus flytrap that Nolter hand feeds full size rabbits too. But to further his research he needs
humans to experiment on, so Nolter gets the local freak show owner Lynch (Tom Baker), and a deformed freak himself, to snatch young women
and bring them to him. Lynch hopes that maybe one day the Professor will cure his deformed face, and if professor Nolter has any unsuccessful
experiments, well then Lynch has a few more "Freaks" to add to his freak show circus. Sooner or later, one of Nolters failed experiments (a half
man/venus flytrap) breaks loose from his lab and into the community and starts attacking, devouring people with this venusfly trap chest mouth.

The opening credits of the movie were re-markable. First I thought I was watching a documentary about plants, 'cause for about 5 minutes, you
see seedlings slowly growing into full size plants, and flowers' buds blooming. It was very different, but somewhat entertaining and fantastic to
watch. But seeing a plant actually eating a rabbit just blew me away, and so did the plant that bleeds blood! The Special FX crew definetly did an
awesome job at those effects, especially for a low budget film. Actor Donald Pleasence is no doubt a superb and outstanding actor, so too is Tom
Baker, but what kinda spun me out is the way Tom was dressed. He kinda look like the guy from
Dr Who. Those who are Dr.Who fans will probably
already know that Tom Baker landed the role as
Dr.Who a few years later after he starred in this film. Ironic or what?

For a film that is now outdated and tacky looking, it can still be some what entertaining. I personally thought it was a little boring and drags on a
bit, but I guess fans who love Donald Pleasence, Tom Baker and those who dig those
Dr. Phibes films, with the bubbling beakers and test tubes of
all various different colours, will probably get a good kick out of this film.

Subversive Cinema did an awesome job in giving
The Freakmaker a excellent picture transfer, and also they have thrown in a shitload of essential
extras on the DVD for your enjoyment. That's one thing I got to hand it to Subversive Cinema for, they really know how too look after us in the DVD
extras department. So those who don't end up enjoying the movie, well, don't worry the extras will keep you busy for a while.

Students have been going missing from the local college, and the one person who knows what's
happened to them is Dr. Noller, a rogue biologist. Not satisfied with the pace of natural selection in
driving evolution, Noller wants to push things further by creating his own genetically engineered
creations. Having already created some amazing specimins by mixing the DNA of plants and animals,
the doctor has now set his sights higher, and want to work on modifying humans, as well.
