The First recipient of the newly formed Animation Award in the Japanese Academy Awards is a real gem of family entertainment, This movie is a
sequel of sorts to the original novel by Tsutsui Yasutaka, and the 1983 live-action movie - the main character's aunt is Yoshiyama Kazuko, the
protagonist of the novel. The scenes featuring her in this movie are liberally sprinkled with references to the original novel and movie, including her
description of a Sunday that was suddenly over before she knew it, and her former boyfriend who promised to return some day, to give a few
examples.

It is the story of Makoto Konno an everyday schoolgirl whose life is a very run of mill but very happy one, she live with her parents and little sister
goes to school, spends time with her friends, loves baseball and pudding, then one day after school she is on her way to visit her auntie "Witch"
and next thing she know her bike brakes are not working and heading down a hill towards a train crossing and what looks to be certain death but
when she hits and boom gate she find herself a few minutes in the past, at first Makoto is very puzzled by it all but her auntie explains to her the
whole concept of time leaping.
With her new power to jump back in time Makoto finds things in life so much better: embarrassing situations are corrected, and she can have her
favourite food anytime, spending endless hours with her friends etc.
But with each leap Makoto starts to alter the fate of those around her at first just people from her school but over time it starts to have adverse
effects on those she cares for, Makoto soon learns how and why she has this gift and she starts to understand if she gets closer to a magic secret.

This was a film I had heard many good things about but did not know if it would be my kind of film but I went into it with a open mind and was glad
I did, it is one of magic fantasy films that only come along at rare times.
The animation is breathtaking and beautiful the voice work also perfect (did not watch it with English track), each time you view it I believe you will
pick up something new.
I won't be everyone's type of anime as it has no gore or other nasty stuff that is the norm in animation form Japan and a teen slice of life/tentative
romance/drama the story seems like it could be cliché, but they do interesting things with it.

Madman Entertainment do their usual outstanding job with this 2 disc set, the print is clear and pristine, packed with extras:
DISC 1:
- Audio commentary track with director Mamoru Hosoda and cast members, it's a fun and lively track we get all sorts of interesting stories and tid
bits please note this is in Japanese with English subtitles

DISC 2:
- The meat of the extras, main feature played alongside storyboards again with a commentary track this is a fascinating look into how a anime film
goes form storyboards to finished movie a must for anyone has a interest in what goes in the making of anime, DIRECTION PROFILE a 34 minute
talk with Mamoru Hosoda again a good look into the technical side of anime, Mamoru fills us on everything he can and comes across and a great
guy with a huge love for what he does.
- I short feature on the films premiere in Tokyo and we get to meet the people behind the voices and tell us what the would get up too if they
could go back in time etc.
- We also get behind the scenes look at the premiere fun but nothing exciting.
- The extras are filled out with the music video for "GARNET" by Hanako Oku a ballard that fits the tone of the film perfect, a good song but again
not everyone will like it, the extras are finished off with a trailer and teaser trailer.

This a great family film give it  a shot when you want something different or are looking for a fantasy film that will make you think.
