SCREENER/APPROX. 80 MINS/2006/ENGLAND R18+
A group of mercenaries are made to evacuate their spaceship in man size escape pods after taking heavy fire by unidentified Space bandits. A
highly wanted terrorist is also aboard the spaceship and has managed to escape his cell and into a escape pod, before the spaceship explodes.
There pods are slowly pulled down by a near by planet gravity force, causing the 10 mercenaries and inmates to be stranded on the deserted
planet. It’s not long after they begin to see weird identifying shadows moving from a distance, that are slowly getting closer to their base camp.
One by one they begin to fall prey to malevolent a supernatural creature that pulls the human soul out of their host’s body. The mercenaries are
now locked and loaded, and prepare to fight back until help arrives, but they soon realize that their highly powered plasma riffles do not have any
effect on the creatures, but only an ancient 6 shooter pistol can hold them at bay.

Scottish filmmaker and screenplay writer Mark Stirton creates a pretty interesting film called
The Planet. The Planet is your typical science fiction
supernatural thriller that manages to be quiet entertaining at times, and which sadly at other times rather dull and boring but yet slightly
entertaining and enjoyable to watch.
The Planet has a lot of similarities to another great science fiction horror flick called Pitch Black, but if you
drop the scorpion shadow looking creatures and add in a human ghost like alien, and then you will have
The Planet. At the beginning of the movie
I was overwhelmed by the special effects, it felt like I was watching a low budget version of
Star Wars at certain times. But towards the end of the
movie the plot slowly started to fall apart: I didn’t really understand what the hell was going on. Just that the special effects just went into
overdrive trying to create a great ending, which didn’t pay off at all. The one thing that really got on my nerves was the scenery of the movie was
shot, at times it look like they were on a beach and then other times in a golf course sand pit. I was just waiting for some guy walking in the
background or riding a golf buggy to the next hole.

The cast were all unknown to me, and I must admit, the cast were fairly enjoyable to veg out to. Actor Mike Mitchell who could probably pass as
clone of a well known WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) superstar called Batista. I am not shitting you, if this guy got the same tattoos as
Batista he could step in for him anytime of his career. Apart from his split looking appearance, Mitchell would have been the only cast member that
really stood out in the movie the most. He gave a solid performance with his character, and never for one minute was boring on-screen. The rest of
the cast also did a remarkable job with their characters, but right now Mike Mitchell was the man who stole the spotlight.

The special effects alone are top notch right throughout
The Planet, from the alien creatures, to the spaceship being under attack and right down
to the effects of the pulse riffles firing. Director Stirton was able to get all the visual effects done for free, leaving him able to put the rest of the
budget ($10,000us) which he had to work with into wardrobe and  other miscellaneous items needed to create the this movie.

In the DVD extra department, i cannot really comment on, due to fact we were sent a screener which only had the movie and trailer on the DVD.

Sadly the visual effects alone doesn’t save the film enough. Even though it was entertaining to watch, I did manage to loose track of what was
going on, or maybe the fact I was watching a bunch of men running around on a beach like scenery didn’t really do it for me. I highly recommend
you play it safe guys, and you might want to rent this movie before buying it on DVD. But if you are a huge science fiction fan who doesn’t mind
watching a movie with a low budget, then for sure, go ahead right now and purchase this movie.
