With Giallo films slowly falling out of favour in the mid to late 70s, most probably due to over saturation, towards the end of the cycle the sleaze-
meter was set to overdrive to try and save a slowly dying genre. Giallo A Venezia, Virgin Terror (AKA Red Rings Of Fear) & Strip Nude For Your
Killer are probably the most well known efforts from the "Sleaziallo" period, particularly Giallo A Venezia which is deserving of its reputation.
But what about The Sister Of Ursula?
The Sister Of Ursula is , funnily enough, about Dagmar Beyne (Stefanio D'Amario - Zombie, Nightmare City, Cyclone) and her younger sister
Ursula (Barbara Magnolfi - Suspiria, Suspected Death Of A Minor, Cut & Run). It seems the sisters have had a rough go at life lately with the
death of their Father, their Mother has gone into hiding, and quite frankly Ursula is turning into a real nut-job with some form of psychic powers.
The pair are travelling from town to town trying to find their Mother, but also get a bit of relaxation. Upon arriving at a very swanky hotel bizarre
murders are occurring with just about every female guest being fucked to death by a monster wooden Dildo! But there’s than meets the eye
happening at the hotel as well, with lots of love affairs happening as well as a bit of Drug Trafficking, all this and Ursula is slowly sinking deeper &
deeper into madness. But Ursula also posses the gift of seeing into the future and knows exactly who the murderer is and who the next victims will
be...
Plodding along on the absolute flimsiest plot for a Giallo I have ever seen, The Sister Of Ursula is a family drama first and foremost with a hell of a
lot of Sexploitation thrown into the mix, with the Giallo idea seeming to be an afterthought. In the included interview with director Enzo Milioni he
states that: Ursula was only made after a false start on another project and he made a bet saying he could make it. He also states he was just
following the herd in the idea to make a Sleazy Giallo. And that's exactly why a lot of Giallo fans have been trying to track it down over the years.
Featuring full frontal nudity by every female member in the cast (except Barbara Magnolfi, who pops out a tit) the sex scenes border on hardcore,
and in fact a version was doing the rounds with Hardcore inserts spliced in as well!
The Giallo part only rears its head every 25 minutes or so and while the identity is somewhat surprising, when thinking about it you could've picked
the killer in the first 10 minutes.
Available on DVD thanks to those fine purveyors of Euro-trash, Severin Films, The Sister of Ursula fits in really well with the rest of the goodies
they have been unloading on trash fans since their inception. Sure the film isn't one of their better ones, but that still doesn't stop them from giving
the disc a great release. With a rather nice windscreen transfer the print used is in really good condition, with only grain evident and the odd
scratch here & there. Sound is Italian Mono with the option of English Subs.
The extras on the disc include a half-hour interview with director Enzo Milioni, who has a lot to say about the film, the cast, the absolutely
gorgeous locations used, and also brings out a little treat... the wooden Dildo from the film!!. Also included is the original theatrical trailer.
The Sister of Ursula really isn't that great of a film. The Giallo aspect falls flat on its arse while all the sex & nudity, which is what gave the film its
notoriety in the first place, seems a bit forced… but is still rather easy on the eye. That said all the cast delivers strong performances, particularly
Magnolfi (although some of her whacked out mumblings leave you with a what the fuck is that supposed to mean vibe) The Sister of Ursula is an
odd little curio that Giallo & Sleaze fans may wanna check out
