Back in the early 70's Roger Corman’s New World Pictures were enjoying a huge hit streak at the local drive inns and Grindhouse theaters with
films like Death Race 2000 and The Big Bird Cage etc.
The Big Doll House was the first in a set of low budget WIP films made by New World Pictures and was also Pam Grier's (Jackie Brown, Coffy,
shitloads of other cool flicks) first major role. After the success of Big Doll House, Grier starred in a few more WIP films for both New World Pictures
(Big Bird Cage) and American International Pictures (Black Mama, White Mama AKA Chicks In Chains). All these films mentioned above were
huge successes, however nestled in the middle of those films is this little gem from NWP.
Made in the same year as Big Doll House (1971), Women in Cages follows in the same well worn path of other WIP films that were shot in
Indonesia at the time. However this time around, Grier is not an inmate. She is the ruthless head Warden Alabama, and I tell you what, she gives
Ilsa a run for her money in the nasty chick warden status! Alabama is one mean-ass bitch that you definitely do not cross, as the four main inmates
(Sandy, Stoke, Teresa & Jeff) find out. You see, when Alabama doesn't get what she wants she has a certain room called the "play pen" that is full
of all sorts of wonderful torture devices! One inmate has her genitals burned, another is electrocuted and other lovely stuff.
However after a while the 4 have had enough of Alabama's brutality and decide to escape, which is no easy prospect as the jungle surrounding
the prison is full of Trackers employed by the prison to find any escapee's. One night the girls take Alabama hostage and break out via a sewage
tunnel in "the hole". Once out everything seems to be going OK. They tie Alabama up to a tree and keep going, until Teresa turns back to untie
Alabama because she has a lesbian relationship going on with her. Here is where trouble starts as the trackers have caught up and being the
gentlemen that they are, rape both Teresa & Alabama before leaving them for dead to catch up with the others.
The other 3 haven't exactly had it easy either. Sandy, who is a heroin junkie and is starting to get weak from withdrawals, she remembers that an
older man with a boat lives nearby, and that he may be able to help them escape. Which he sort of does, as the girls end up on a floating
brothel.......
Considering this film to the other 2 main WIP films that also came out of NWP at the same time, its very surprising how this one is hardly ever
heard of, as in my book its quite possibly the most enjoyable of the 3! Shitloads of action, great characters, a fairly coherent story... Hell the only
thing to really whine about is the lack of nudity! Not that there is none, but for a WIP film its quite tame, only showing the odd titty shot (including
Grier's superhuman size melons!) However don't let that detract from the viewing experience as this was a little gem that really surprised me, as I
must admit I wasn’t expecting a hell of a lot from it...
This DVD is a budget bare bones disc by New Concorde, this disc is fairly easy to find in the bargain bins, and is worth grabbing for such a low price
tag. Transfer isn’t too bad, sound is basic stereo, no extras to speak of at all, but well what do you expect when the description on the back cover
would be lucky to be 20 words long?
In short, more B grade drive-inn fun from back in the day, and with Corman's name on it, that was always a seal of cheese appeal that still stands
strong today. Bon Appetite!
