On first viewing of Xtro I wasn’t that thrilled with it, seemed like a cheap crappy, unclear sci-fi with some awesome little ideas throughout. Ive
found it to be much more enjoyable on the second watching.
The story which isn’t all that spectacular, or really all that clear for that matter, It is about a guy name Sam (Philip Sayer) who is abducted by aliens
whilst out in the yard with his son Tony (Simon Nash). Three years has pass, and Sams wife Rachel (Bernice Stegers) has moved on and is living
with a new bloke called Joe (Danny Brainin), who Tony isn’t too keen on as usual, and Tony is still dealing with the fact that his father was
abducted and didn’t simply leave. At this point on the time line a very cool and gory looking disjointed 4 legged alien makes its way to earth, which
makes for the first, and really only very creepy scene in the film where he appears on the side of the road and forces a couple in there car to
swerve around it. In typical fashion they are killed, the alien then proceeds to attack a lady in her house, and impregnates her through an organ
that extends from its body and kind of suctions onto her mouth. The lady wakes up a bit later, and in graphic fashion gives birth to a full grown
man which turns out to be Sam (reborn that is). That’s a great moment. So a goo covered Sam is back and he’s not the same. Rachel and Joe
refuse to believe anything other than he simply left them, yet Tony knows the truth.
I don’t exactly know what the purpose of Sam returning to earth is, or him being abducted. It never made that clear, is he back for Tony, or Rachel
or both, why? It’s a shame the story wasn’t made a little more elaborate, it could have been great. Although for what it is, its good stuff even
though it lacks sense. One purpose of Sam we know is to implant the alien DNA into Tony, which gives him some interesting little powers. The film
gets very fucking surreal and kooky from here, which is great. He turns a clown doll into a living midget, with spotlights coming from nowhere and
clown music. One of my favourite parts is where he gives life to a GI-JO figure, and making it life size, and uses it to kill! And another involving a toy
sized tank.
The film is paced well, it does progress and things do happen which keeps you interested throughout. There are enough gory and gross effects in
it as well to give it a good feel and the sound effects to go along with it, and it features some gratuitous nudity from the French babysitter Analise
(Maryam d'Abo) which is very acceptable. The 80’s synth score fits great too.
Its a very fun film to watch, it doesn’t make much sense plot wise and isn’t really spectacular in terms of dialogue and acting but its hardly bad, just
standard, but so much of the film is above standard. There are more than enough awesome aspects that outweigh the non-good. Its one any sci-fi
fan should see, there is an R1 DVD by Image Entertainment and I would recommend you grab it or the vhs, whether you’ve seen it or haven’t.
